Kendra d'Eon

Independence and grit are essential ingredients for entrepreneurs and they've always come naturally to Kendra d'Eon. At the ripe old age of 10, d'Eon worked a variety of odd jobs and was able to save $1000 to buy the front half of her very first horse (her mother kindly chipped in for the other half). Six years, several horses and countless coaching clinics later, d'Eon is the proud owner of Kendra's Equestrian Services, based in Northeast Harbour, NS.

D'Eon offers riding and grooming lessons, boarding, jumping demonstrations and birthday party services to clients throughout Southwestern Nova Scotia. And while many of her competitors are forced to close down during the winter months, d'Eon is able to continue offering her services throughout the winter months, thanks to her location in the Harbour Edge Equestrian Facility, one of the only indoor riding arenas in the area.

For d'Eon, an avid competitor herself, running her own business has opened her eyes to other aspects of horsemanship. "It's not just that I'm able to work in my backyard and be around horses all the time - which I love," she says. "I get to see my students learn new things and do well themselves. I love seeing them succeed."

A testament to d'Eon's skills as an instructor, four of her students competed at a recent horse show, and all of them won ribbons in their respective events. D'Eon says the Students in Business program has helped her achieve goals she has long dreamed about. "Running your own business is an awesome experience," she says. "I recommend it!"
